DHL Speed up Parcel Sorting
DHL have installed state of the art camera-based parcel recognition technology. These are currently being used in DHL collection hubs in Madrid, Barcelona and Vitoria.

The technology aims to improve the speed of parcel sorting and so improve the speed of delivery to customers.

DHL's distribution centres process shipments automatically and must identify destination addresses at high speed for quick, accurate parcel sorting. This is done by using machine vision to read package barcodes. The hubs in Madrid, Barcelona and Vitoria previously used laser scanners but are now achieving improved read rates and therefore faster handling levels at all three sites.

Creative thinkers wanted
The DHL innovation award is now in it's third year. The award rewards innovative and sustainable courier solutions. The 2010 award is most likely to appeal to young scientists but entry is open to companies and individuals.

"We need creative ideas to enable logistics to meet the requirements of tomorrow," explains Petra Kiwitt, Head of DHL Solutions & Innovations. "This need for creativity is confirmed by the many projects we have developed in our DHL Innovation Center together with partners from the business and scientific community, and which are now ready to be marketed. The DHL Innovation Day and its award ceremony have become integral parts of our support for committed people who are ready to assume thought leadership without losing sight of the practicability of their ideas."

Innovative solutions that recognise customer need at their core are most likely to be successful. The submission of a business plan will also be beneficial. A panel of experts from R&D, politics and business will evaluate the entries.
